IBUS needed now for ubuntu 10.04 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1267584-- I followed the standard instructions for scim and they didn't quite work. It appears that the latest ubuntu linux now supports ibus, and following the ibus instructions, and rebooting a number of times :) , an ibus icon (a keyboard) appeared in my tray, and I could then instal hindi, sanskrit, latex, sa-itrans and so on as before. This icon is more handy, as it allows one to turn off the input method and default to American English :)
