Auditory Displays
A great deal of research effort has focused on developing realistic three-dimensional auditory spatial displays (for use by fighter pilots, air traffic controllers, gamers, etc.). However, very little is known about how much information the human operator can extract from different auditory displays, what acoustic dimensions are most effective for conveying information, or whether different acoustic dimensions are independent. We are exploring how different spatial and nonspatial attributes of sound interact perceptually in order to develop effective methods for presenting arbitrary information to a listener through auditory displays.
